New Addition to the Family
Are you truly ready for this?
Adding a new dog to the family can be a fun, rewarding, and fulfilling experience as well as challenging at times. Ruined furniture, chewed up shoes, urination smell all over the house, and unexpected vet trips are just a few of the possible struggles new dog owners will face. Cuddles, bonding, new training skills learned, companionship, saving a dog's life, and assistance with day to day tasks are wonderful benefits to owning a dog. I help potential dog owners, from first time to seasoned, young or wiser, look at dog ownership from the lens of the physical and psychological needs of a canine companion. We evaluate:
-
Why you want a canine companion
-
The pros and cons
-
Considerations to bringing a new dog home.
-
How to choose a dog part 1: DNA - from mutt to designer breed and anything in between
-
How to choose a dog part 2: Energy - looking at energy and activity level in owner and dog
-
How to prepare
-
Training goals and beginning skills
-
Making a plan that works for the whole family (from a single owner to large families)
-
Visiting the potential new dog (I will come with you to new dog visits)
This service is for those who are truly committed to providing the best for their canine. I do not expect owners to buy designer dog foods (simple with least possible ingredients are best) or spend a lot of money on well-marketed but unnecessary toys. I will not advise you to make purchases that are not truly beneficial to your family and the new dog. I will help your family evaluate what is best for both you and your furry friend. I will work closely with you throughout this process. Once your final decision has been made I will teach you (and family members) the skills needed to set up a successful start with your new furry friend.
I also specialize in working with children and individuals with diverse abilities, both cognitive and physical, to help them learn and understand canine communication and safety.
